RIP: David Crosby of Crosby, Stills and Nash and The Byrds

Tough opening of the year!

Great song writer, harmonizer, and coke head, he passed at the age of 81, cause not disclosed. Twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with The Byrds and CSN.

Yet another voice to be missed, silenced.

It really has been a tough start to the year. :(

Too many greats are in that age bracket. :(

When I was a hippie, my favorite band was Crosby Stills & Nash - and I was most especially impressed by their vocal harmonies and counterpoint. When I try to sing one of their songs, I wind up trying to sing all the vocal parts, which never quite works. My favorite-est one of their songs was the one written by a merger between CSN and Jefferson Airplane, "Wooden Ships" - a song about post-apocalyptic survivors.

"If you smile at me, I will understand, 'cause that is something everybody everywhere does in the same language.... I can see by your coat, my friend, you're from the Other Side, but there's just one thing I've got to know, can you tell me please... who won?"

Wooden Ships is a good one.  For me, their first two albums are the best, but so many good songs over the years.

CSN+Y made so many memorable songs - "Woodstock", "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" (marvelously complex), "ALmost cut my hair", "Guinevere", "Teach Your Children" (Jerry Garcia taught himself to play pedal steel guitar for that one), "Marrakech Express", "Helplessly Hoping"... all of 'em..

And I think every single one of those songs that you named are off of their first two albums!
