RIP: Steve Harwell, 56 - Smash Mouth founding singer

Steve left Smash Mouth two years ago and has been in hospice recently, succumbing to liver failure. October '21 was his last performance with the band at a festival, his performance was erratic and he was described as having Wernicke encephalopathy, which is a neurological disorder caused by a collapse of B vitamins in your system - frequently caused by massive alcoholism.

Smash Mouth had a major hit with All Star, then the movie Shrek came out and it resurged. Myself, I think Walkin' on the Sun is much cooler song.

He was one of two founding members of Smash Mouth to be still with the band, at least up until his departure in '21.

And of course, the Pandemic was one of the last straws for him. Despite his mocking it.

Dammit. I actually enjoyed a couple of their songs.

I did not know he was a mocker, too bad.  My brother believes the vaccines "target the wrong system in your body" based on a report he read from the Schweitzer Institute.  Maybe it was the Salk Institute.  Doesn't matter, it's not like he has a degree in biology or medicine, he's just a bit of an idiot in some things and doesn't understand that most diseases are systemic and that vaccines don't target "the X", they target the virus.  We had a big music event today in Lord of the Rings Online, Walking On The Sun was the first song that I performed.

56 is still too young for so many things. I liked early Smash Mouth, but the overplay of All Star and their Monkees cover kind of pushed them out of my desire to listen to them more. I think the thing I liked best that didn't get the radio play was Padrino, a "funny song about the Mob."
