Play stupid games.... Bored Ape Yacht Club NFT event attendees get severe UV burns!

My mind boggles.

Apparently someone installed the wrong kind of ultraviolet lights to light up the stage at an expo for Bored Ape Yacht Club in Hong Kong last weekend and a number of people experienced severe sun burn and EYE DAMAGE. I mean, I experience eye damage looking at Bored Ape NFTs, apparently this was much worse to the point of people being unable to see! Most sought treatment at local hospitals and I guess didn't require hospitalization, the article is pretty short. The organizers say that less than 1% of attendees and workers were affected.

So that's the new line: NFTs cause blindness and skin cancer!

Frankly, I'm amazed that there would be enough people to attend such an event, much less in Hong Kong.

UPDATE: the people who set up the lights installed UV-C lights which are used to sterilize ENTIRE ROOMS. Sounds like they used the same people who measured the track for the Pan Olympics Games.

They must have had a bunch left over from Covid.

Pro Tip: The UV-C bulbs are kept with the N95s and hand sanitizer. The UV-A bulbs are kept with the Strawberry Alarm Clock posters and bongs.

Try not to mix them up.

Yeah, not a good thing to mix up!  I'm thinking about making a small sterilizer for my wife's oxygen concentration bubbler, using UV-C and an enclosed chamber.  We have a problem with the bottle becoming a bit algal even with using distilled water after a few weeks of use.

Big Clive over on YouTube put a video up (https://youtu.be/6DlfLthx89E) about this and he mentioned that what surprised him was that this was happening *again* as he apparently had talked about a previous event that was using UV-C lights as set dressing for an event. I know he's done multiple previous videos about UV-C lights and has not been at all shy in giving safety warnings and not liking the lax or non-existent safety attitudes many of the sellers seem to have.

Yeah, the original article talked about a DJ event that had a similar problematic twist.  There's a reason why I don't buy products from Alibaba and try to avoid buying inexpensive things online if they come from China: dubious safety protocols.

I worked at a screen printing operation and we cured our coated screens with UV. Luckily the room this was done in was probably the only OSHA compliant one in the building :D

That's kinda funny!  At least that particular danger was mitigated.

That's the kind of thing where someone starts including a rider requiring a bowl of blue-sorted M&Ms for someone just to make sure that everything is listened to and checked over for safety. UV-C is not something you want someone to have regular exposure to.

It is speculated that Chinese manufacturers had too many sterilization UV units on-hand and purposely mis-labeled them in order to move 'em out of inventory.  I don't know if we'll ever hear the full answer.

That's the kind of thing I expect to hear about US shady capitalists, but if the rot has continued to China, well, then we can expect them to do even better at this part of capitalism just like they're doing well at other aspects.
