Amazon Android app store shuts down August 20, 2025

They started it up in 2011 as an alternative to the Google Play store, frankly I'm surprised that it's still going. This mainly affects their Fire devices.

I wasn't even aware it was still around. I used it once long long ago, when they a promo where the full version of Accuweather was free. 'course, when I got a new phone, it went back to the regular free version.

[I thought this was going to be sunsetting the store on all device, but no, it appears to only be on Android devices, and not on their own Fire Tablets or such.]

Given that they're still maintaining the app store for their own devices, surely it's not that much greater of an expense to keep it available for other devices that can use the apps? Admittedly, they're probably only getting marginal usage from it, because they're not offering anything unique to their store. Still, I can imagine that I'm going to get a few questions about it, or people are going to worry their Fire tablets are going to stop working on that day, since when I heard "stopped on Android," I assumed they meant their own things, which also run on Android, as well.

Is Amazon still selling Fire devices?  Maybe they'll do an update to provide a link to the Android store?
