We lost a pet today, Cricket, her exact age is unknown but she was believed to be at least 13 years old. She was mainly pit bull with a touch of dachshund mainly in the ears and face. Several months ago she was having a terrible time breathing and we were afraid she would have to be put to sleep. Cricket was taken to the vet and diagnosed as having a congestive heart issue, she was prescribed some pills that I presume were doggie diuretics that helped her lose a lot of weight, this helped but wasn’t a cure. She still was breathing hard, but was capable of running and jumping.

My mom has noticed that when Cricket was having breathing problems (moreso than usual) she would sit with her head arched back, I guess trying to straighten her trachea, at time like this Cricket cannot breath if she’s lying down. Last night she was exhibiting this problem, Mom took her to the couch and rolled up a towel for her, this normally helped. Last night it didn’t help.

Mom called around 11:30am and told me about last night, and that the decision had been made to have her put to sleep at 1pm. I drove up to my parent’s house to say goodbye, arriving at 12:20, unfortunately Cricket had passed away at about 12:15.

She was interred in the back yard along with most of our other departed pets. Yes, it’s against the law, fuck the law.

Love you, Cricket. You will be missed.

I’ll be posting a photo later.

UPDATED 1/9/05:
Cricket passed about 12:15pm, for whatever reason I posted 1:15. And I'm not posting the picture unless I find some others, which I hope I can find. The final picture is not the way that I wish to remember her by.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Poor little Cricket.

There's actually a law against burying pets in your yard? Bastards. When my family lived in Mesa we broke in numerous times (hadn't heard about it). Good on ya for noncompliance. I guess that's just another of the 1001 reasons I'm glad I left Arizona (and am a Libertarian).

Sympathies

Cricket sounds like she was neat. I'm sorry for your loss -- pets leave such a huge hole in one's heart when they go, but it's the price we pay to have them in our lives.

I'd never heard of the can't-bury law -- and I doubt many people even think about adhering to it. I know my mom buried the family dogs in the back yard when I was growing up. (When she got older, she simply kept their cremains on a shelf in the closet. When I scattered her ashes (also illegally), I scattered the various dogs she'd "saved up" with her. I figured she'd appreciate their company.)

Sorry to hear it. We went through something similar last week when one of our ferrets died suddenly. She'd not exibhited any problematic symptoms, just slowing down a bit as she got older. That really sucks, especially when you're hurrying to try and get to say goodbye....and miss by just a few minutes. I had that happen once and it was agonizing.

And it makes perfect sense to want to put up a pic of her as you recall her, as she really was.

my condolences

This is why, as much as I love my pets, I would not pony up $50K for a cloned kitten, even if I had the money to spare. For me the journey is getting to know each animal and its personality. Each one takes a special place in my memories.

Peace.
