Now, how lame can you get? I should send out an email that says "Dear bank user, please give me your account information, oh, and also tell me who you bank with." The funny thing is that CUNA is an ASSOCIATION OF CREDIT UNIONS! You don't belong to CUNA, your credit union does.

Morons.

Credit Union National Association

Dear Credit Union Member,

During our regulary schedule account maintenance and verification we have detected a slight error in
your billing information on file with CUNA. This might be due to either following reasons:

- A recent change in your personal information (i.e. change of address)
- Submitting invalid information during the initial sign up process.
- An inability to accurately verify your selected option of payment due an internal error
within our processors.
Your credit card on file with CUNA:
Card number: XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX (Not shown for security purposes) Expiration date: XX/XX
Please update your billing information here:

http://update.cuna.org/cgi-bin/BillingUpdate.htm

If your account information is not updated, your credit/debit card access will become restricted.

Thank you.
Credit Union National Association, Inc.

The url directs to http://p4180-ipad07matuyama.ehime.ocn.ne.jp/fcu2.html, I find it kind of funny that it comes from Japan. I'd never heard of them being big in the fraud game, but I guess as many people that they have over there who are online, I shouldn't be surprised.

My folks got hit a couple of months ago, I think they still don't know how their information was compromised. The thing that really sucks is that if you keep the amount you steal low, say under $1000, you probably won't be prosecuted because the police and the county prosecutors just don't have the man power.

The prosecution strategies for various categories of crime are interesting, to say the least. For example, I've been subpoenaed to Court tomorrow to testify as a witness in a Grand Larceny case. In this state, you can be charged with Grand Larceny with a potential penalty of 20 years in jail if you steal (drumroll) $5 or more from a person! Now if you steal from a business, the level is $200 or more.

Yet these computer crime/credit card fraud people hardly ever get prosecuted. I don't believe that it's an issue of law enforcement shortages. It's just a hell of a lot easier to drag Bubba to court than to pursue crimes committed using a technology that police departments won't educate their minions on.
