Bob Dylan says the quality of modern recordings is "atrocious," and even the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on disc.

"I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past 20 years, really," the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

Dylan, who released eight studio albums in the past two decades, returns with his first recording in five years, Modern Times, next Tuesday.

Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, "Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway."

"You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them," he added. "There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ... static."

Dylan said he does his best to fight technology, but it's a losing battle.

"Even these songs probably sounded 10 times better in the studio when we recorded 'em. CDs are small. There's no stature to it."

He's one artist that will probably never find a place in my collection, but I do respect his views (to a degree). I like being able to understand my lyrics, and I don't care much for atonal harmonica: which is why Blues Traveler and a couple of other bands also don't really work for me.

First, there's his official MySpare page (http://www.myspace.com/weirdal) which launches a downloadable song called Don't Download This. It's an amusing little piece. Second, if you scroll down his main web page (http://www.weirdal.com/home.htm) you'll see a link to a song called You're Pitiful. Apparently the artist agreed to the parody, but the label then rescinded permission. So it's not on Al's forthcoming album, but you can download it for free.

(Here's a link to a higher bitrate copy of Don't Download This Song)

I had a Thomas Dolby/Peter Gabriel song to point you to on Dolby's site (http://www.thomasdolby.com/), but Dolby took the song offline after thinking about it overnight.

I ordered two text books a couple of weeks ago. I received confirmation, in fact, I received one of the books (the one for Thursday night, which is good).

Today I receive an email that TheBookPros cancelled the order for my book. No explanation given. I'm getting a refund for my money. So I click on a link to go back to the book that I need to re-order it (and now I get to pay add'l fundage for express shipping to get it on time!) and there are two copies being offered by TheBookPros.

Judging by their recent negative feedback, they are not a terribly reputable seller. They've had 107 neutral and 144 negative feedback IN THE LAST MONTH. I should have looked at their rating statistics before I ordered.

(Slashdot thread http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=06/08/23/162246)

It goes into a bit of detail, but I think it should be understandable by most non-geeks with a good level of computer literacy.

This is not to say that the Mac OS is bullet-proof, just much more resistant to malware or getting pwnd.
