I learned an interesting factoid last month. Thanksgiving wasn't a fixed-date national holiday here until the early 40's. Specifically, the first celebration was a week or so before Pearl Harbor was attacked.
I lost one relative in WW II, my dad's only brother died on, IIRC, Guadal Canal. Sadly, not that there is a good way to die regardless of whether or not you're in combat or in a war, he didn't die in combat: he was electrocuted. He was doing some maintenance on a circuit, there was a shift change, and the next guy who came on didn't know why the circuit was turned off, so he turned it back on.
I'm a little surprised that my brother and I don't have a James or Earl in our name.
