I just found out that a friend of mine who I knew throughout my childhood and went to high school with has Lou Gehrig's Disease (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis). He's no more than a couple of years older than I am.

Shit. Damn. Fuck. Crap. *big sigh* *tears welling*

"Most people with ALS die from respiratory failure, usually within 3 to 5 years from the onset of symptoms. However, about 10 percent of those individuals with ALS survive for 10 or more years."

Stephen Hawking first started showing signs of it 45 years ago, but that is so far into the tiny numbers of statistical survival that it's unreasonable to expect many people with ALS to live that long.

Here's to hoping that Barry is in that 10%, I have no idea how long ago he was diagnosed, but he is now medically retired. I've got to go see him when I'm in Phoenix for Thanksgiving. It's weird because just a couple of weeks ago, I had a dream about my deceased friend Jason, and in the dream, he was alive -- his death had been staged, though I don't know why. The next night I dreamed of a friend named Scott, who was mutual friends with me and Barry and a few others.

I've had way too fucking many friends die.
