GARRUMPH!

Wednesday we were going to go to Phoenix for my oldest niece's high school graduation. Phoenix is 400 miles, if we leave around 6pm, we get there around midnight. It had been rather windy, we saw a huge number of tractor/trailers parked on the side of the interstate as we headed out of town. 12 miles out, we found out why: the freeway was closed: high wind, poor visibility, and accidents littered the interstate to the state line some 150 miles away. So we turn around and drive BACK 12 miles to our apartment.

The poodle was not amused. Lots of packing activity, a half hour trip in the car, and we were back where we started!

Minor setback: Russ had been sleeping all day, so we would potentially be fine as she could drive all night long.

So we take the poodle and our laptops back inside, turn on the air conditioning, and walk across the street to a pretty good Thai restaurant for dinner. Spend a couple of hours there, check the road condition web sites, find the interstate has been re-opened, so we load up and head off again.

Net loss, about three hours. Russ drove all night, I zoned in and out of consciousness all the night. We get in to Phoenix about 3am.

We usually have a bit of an itinerary when we go to Phoenix as there's too much to do and very little time to do it in. Thursday morning I had a doctor appointment with my naturopath for some accupuncture as I've been having some bad problems with my shoulder since my operation (details to follow eventually), Thursday night was the graduation, Friday morning I was going to go to the police department and hang out with my friends and having an extensive tech talk with their DBA, Friday night dinner with friends including a former neighbor who now lives in Omaha who happens to be in town for some linux training, Saturday we're playing Champions (superhero role-playing game) -- the first game of a new campaign!, and Satuday night friends are having a Memorial Day weekend party.

Pretty full dance card!

So this evening my wife and I go to my barber for me to have a haircut, and I'm feeling flat-out bad. As in "keep the trash can nearby as I might throw up" bad. I don't throw up, but when we get home, I'm running a fever of 102! Needless to say driving across town for the graduation and party just does not appeal, so I call my sister and tell her that I won't be going and sleep for about an hour.

When I wake up, my temperature is down to a touch over 101 and I'm feeling much better. We go out to Chino Bandido for dinner and hit a book store on the way home, and my temperature is down another half a degree when we get home.

Finally I go to bed, it's about 11am. Wake up at 4am and my temperature is back to 101.

*sigh*

I guess if my temperature is over 100 in the morning that I'll see a doctor that I've been seeing here and get some bloodwork done, I'll also call off the police department, which would suck, because (a) I was looking forward to seeing the people that I used to work with, and (b) it was a chance to eat at Crazy Jim's, a very good restaurant here in Phoenix. And if I'm not feeling better by dinner, I'll probably cancel me going to dinner with Audrey and Terry. We saw Audrey in March when we were last down here, saw Terry and his wife Christmas of '06, so it would be nice to see him again.

I just really hate being sick when I'm out of town. I hate being sick period, but out of town really sucks.
