We're on an extended road trip, we left last week and will have driven around 2500 miles when we get home next week. We left last Wednesday, spent some time in Colorado with friends and family and played a lot of games (and I won two games of Tichu!) Monday we drove to Santa Fe and spent the night, then yesterday we drove to Phoenix where we'll be staying about a week.
Today was errands day, tomorrow an immunology conference starts, we're both really looking forward to learning more about my condition. We had enough time last night to do one errand, picking up a new laptop battery and two new laptop power supplies (my one complaint about Macintosh laptops is their power supplies are crap, you're lucky to get 18 months out of one). We go to the Apple store, spend money, then walk over to California Pizza Kitchen and split a pizza for dinner as we couldn't stop for lunch on the drive down from Santa Fe (too hot for the poodle to sit in the car).
And here's where the serendipity kicks in.
We eat the pizza, then I need to wash my hands. I go to the bathroom, and en route, notice a table of two couples playing a board game. It's not one that I recognize. I wash my hands then on the way back to my wife stop and ask them about the game. We chat briefly, then I notice that there's actually about 5 tables of people playing board games!
I walk down the row, recognizing Quirkle (I need to buy a set) and a couple of others. The two people on the end are playing Bananagrams, a great game if you like Scrabble-esque word games. I ask the girl to confirm it's Bananagrams and not some other game that I didn't recognize, she invites me to play and then the guy she's playing with pipes up and says "Hi, Wayne!"
It's my friend Dan.
Haven't seen him in ages, probably a couple of years. He lives about 5 miles from CPK, turns out there's a Games! group on Meetup.com and they get together every Tuesday (this particular group) at a random restaurant, it just so happened that they were at that CPK at that time.
Sadly, we were on a bit of a time table and needed to get to Trader Joe's, so Russet got in one game of Bananagrams and we had to leave.
Still, serendipity can be pretty awesome.
