An Apollo astronaut said this?
Aug. 18th, 2015 06:03 am"My own experience talking to people has made it clear the ETs had been attempting to keep us from going to war and help create peace on Earth...[Air Force] officers told me UFOs were frequently seen overhead and often disabled their missiles. Other officers from bases on the Pacific Coast told me their [test] missiles were frequently shot down by alien spacecraft."
—Apollo 14 astronaut Edgar Mitchell
Or possibly that making missiles is very hard and they fail a lot and it's nice to blame a failure on something else?
My wife, an astronomer with a PhD, has said "I have seen UFOs. I didn't know what they were, that doesn't mean they're extraterrestrial." The interesting ones are the people who don't think we've been to our Moon because of REASONS, yet they believe aliens have crossed the staggering distances of interstellar space and visited us.
Maybe they have, maybe they haven't. I haven't seen convincing evidence that they have. I'm also not entirely certain that the current iteration of Earth's inhabitants will live long enough to get to other stars.
ETA: Looking over his Wikipedia entry, yep, he believes in UFOs and all sorts of new age stuff. And he actually walked on the moon. At least he isn't claiming that the moon landings were faked.
