He has a very severe form of hearing loss. The problem is that it's variable in both intensity and duration, and this makes it pretty much impossible for him to record with his band! There are days when he can hear quite well, there are other days when he's pretty much stone deaf.
Touring is largely out of the question, he might be able to cobble together some songs with his band via remote recording, but I would imagine someone else will have to do the editing.
I can sympathize, he has it a lot worse than me, but I can appreciate what he's going through. It's rough.
