He has a very severe form of hearing loss. The problem is that it's variable in both intensity and duration, and this makes it pretty much impossible for him to record with his band! There are days when he can hear quite well, there are other days when he's pretty much stone deaf.

Touring is largely out of the question, he might be able to cobble together some songs with his band via remote recording, but I would imagine someone else will have to do the editing.

I can sympathize, he has it a lot worse than me, but I can appreciate what he's going through. It's rough.

What an amazing career! Nominated thrice for an Academy Award, snubbed each time. Finally bought the rights to the book One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, brought it to Broadway, grew frustrated that no studio wanted to turn it into a movie, so he gave it to his son Michael. The film won five Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Actor. Eventually Kirk was given the consolation prize of an Honorary Oscar.

What a career! This has to be the longest obit that I've seen on Rolling Stone in a very long time, and it is well worth the read. Absolutely fascinating.
