I was crawling around the guy's site because he has a tour of an underground missile silo! Apparently it was a three-missile Titan I installation. And apparently he was arrested and prosecuted for exploring it. I don't know how he managed to keep the photos.

I've been in a decommissioned underground missle silo. Fortunately we managed to run away before the police came.

I was very young and met a boy on a bus. He offered to show me a missle silo in Colorado. How stupid was I? I'm so lucky I'm not dead and buried in said missle silo. Above ground it was gussied up to look like a water treatment plant (as if there'd be a water treatment plant in the middle of nowhere, miles from any town). Underneath, it was a maze of wrecked rooms and the silo, where you could look up and see the truncated ends of the faux pipes above. Some government agent had scribbled "Danger, rattlesnake hibernaculum! For more information call:" like anyone who had climbed under/over all those fences and past all those "keep out, government property" would be stupid enough to admit to having been there.

I didn't have a camera with me and it would have taken special film and a professional flash anyway. Most of the place was very dark. It was cool seeing the huge blast doors, the way the roof was designed to open up and the remains of the computer consoles with all their guts missing and nothing but a tangle of wires left.

This was before the Fall of the Wall, so we really would have been in Bad Trouble had we been caught.

I thought I saw something on HGTV, where a guy had turned an old missle silo into his home.

That has been done. The problem is that the silos invariably have asbestos issues and sometimes unbelievable amounts of dioxin contamination. I'll find something on houses in silos later (I hear it's great for heating/AC bills).
