Whee.

Two things impressed me: I didn't have to pay for parking, and admission was only $1. Far cry from the state and county fairs in Phoenix. I had been hoping for some good photo opportunities, but they didn't materialize. I did a little experimenting with a shot, but I don't think it produced anything that I'll bother sharing.

I did run into our newest tech at work and his family at the fair. Basically he's going into the position that I've been double-filling for the last few months, so my hours drop back to 19 per week, which will really suck. But this will also give me Monday and Tuesday off next week, school starts Thursday but I'll be working Wednesday 8-5 to make up the hours that I won't be working Monday & Tuesday. So basically I'll be spending it driving around Alamogordo dropping off applications. The good thing is that he wants to work weekends, so I'll now have weekends off. They also changed the lab hours for the weekend to 12-6, so there will be much less dead time in the lab.

We've got a nasty problem in the lab: not enough lab aides. Normally we have two at any given time, this semester, at least for now, we've got lots of slots where only one aide is on. We also have two slots where there are no lab aides, so us techs will be doubling-up. That will probably suck.

One good thing from the fair: I registered to vote up here! I was going to do it Monday or Tuesday when I was down job hunting, this way I don't have to look for the county registrar. I have been a registered Republican since I first registered in 1979, and I've voted in EVERY primary and general election since then (I may have missed an occasional school board/bond election, but very few), but it's been a very long time since I voted the elephant ticket. Probably for over a decade I have used my vote to vote against incumbants in the primary and the Dem or Libertarian opponent in the general. This time I registered Independent. The Republicans have become unrecognizable, particularly with the deficits that the GOP-controlled Congress have let El Prezidente run up. The Democrats are spineless (Dare I say Quislings? Perhaps too strong a word, perhaps not). So I refuse to be identified with either of them.

Either party is welcome to court my vote, I'll probably tell 'em both to go to hell.

They'll ignore you, but the polling places will love you. In California, there can't be more than two members of a party on each four or five member board, so as an Undeclared I fit the bill quite nicely (as does my Libertarian mother.)

The closest to a county fair I ever went to was Cheyenne Frontier Days with a marching band. I think it was free to get in, but that may have been because they took us up there to march in the parade.
