The article more specifically says Fascist, but I haven't read the whole thing yet so I have no comment on the fascist label. But I liked the way it started and want to read the whole thing, so I thought I'd share it.

Once upon a time I read an article that compared the ideologies/philosophies of Star Trek vs Star Wars, I think it was written by Orson Scott Card. It was quite interesting, I wish I could find it again.

I find Orson Scott Card a little hit and miss with his fiction.
Granted he did write one of my favourite books (Enders Game) But there are times where Ive read his stuff and gone 'nyeh...that was allright'

But his serious 'academic' stuff is often very good.
I should make an attempt to track more stuff down.

Interesting what I was able to read of it. I've read from various articles that Roddenberry had an optimistic view of the future, but I doubt he had any ideas of how it would be achieved. There was also a considerably different tone from the original series to Next Gen.

I found the original series fun, escapist entertainment. Next Gen took itself a bit too seriously and many times became preachy about things.

Firefly always came on at a time when it was difficult for me to watch, so I only caught a few episodes. It was interesting. I see Serenity. It has an interesting concept, but it's overall tone is not as optimistic.

Depending on where the OSC article was printed, you may be able to find it again on hatrack.com.

Dunno if you tried that yet.
