Topped 21,000 words tonight! Seven days of writing for the first 10,000, four for the second. If I could keep writing daily, I should make it, but I don't know if that will be possible. Plus I'm at the point where the bad guys will start doing bad things, and I'm a little hesitant/uncertain as to how I'll introduce that. Oh well, I'll work on it tomorrow.

Well, there's always the idea of starting from the middle and ignoring the beginning entirely. If Bad Things are underway when the protagonist sticks his head in, the reader gets caught up in the action and doesn't stop to question where the Bad Guys came from. Then you can have the readers figure it out as the protagonist does. Classic mystery trick: no reason not to use it in science fiction.
