Russ had never seen it! It's probably my fav John Carpenter/Kurt Russel film. Such a fun romp! It's interesting realizing that Jack Burton is actually the sidekick.

I commented as the credits were rolling that it's a nice antithesis of action movies, Russ commented that it's rare for an action film to have multiple strong women and multiple romances.

I do like this film. :-)

It's a lot of schlock and eye-candy, but that's OK by me.

It's a very fun film. Does Russ like Hong Kong Fantasy Cinema? Many of those have strong women and lots of romance (Hero, House of Flying Daggers, etc.)

She pretty much is. I've shown her House of Flying Daggers, I don't think I have a copy of Hero. I'll have to look around.

When that movie was first released, I was under the impression that it was a bad parody of kung fu flicks, so I avoided it. When I finally saw it, I realized that it was actually an homage, and I've been a fan ever since. I would have liked to have seen a bit of character development for the three Chinese martial artist/magicians serving the bad guy, but that would only have slowed the pace of the movie to its detriment. Just think, if that movie was made today it would be a two-and-a-half to three hour epic with added scenes that purportedly served to further develop the characters but only served to state the obvious (sorry, is my cynicism showing?).

And in reference to "Hong Kong Fantasy Cinema", the latest movie by Zhang Yimou (who directed both Hero and House of the Flying Daggers) hits general release today. It's Curse of the Golden Flower and stars Chow Yun Fat and Gong Li. I hope to see it early next week.

Curse of the Golden Flower, eh? As it happens, we're going to Las Cruces tomorrow. It might be showing there. If not, we'll be in Phoenix in a month. The question is: how much was cut from the HK release that will be on the DVD? ;-)
