I am very happy!

Total parts and labor to the insurance company: $6,200.

Our deductible: $250.

That's one expensive rock!

Of course, the fact that the dealership has had the car since December 4 makes me none too happy. And one minor PITB is that I'll have to reprogram the radio.

But at least it's back, and it's before the semester starts. They did a full four-wheel alignment on it today, and all seemed well coming up the mountain this evening. And that drive included slush and yuck, all felt well. Tomorrow we're going to Las Cruces and spending the night, so we'll be putting 200+ miles on the fresh repairs and seeing how they do.

I hit four tire dealers and got prices. There are two in Alamogordo that close at 5pm, I'll hit them maybe tomorrow. 'Cruces has a Discount Tire, I'll check them tomorrow. One thing that I cannot understand is why people don't believe me when I tell them tires run a minimum of about $100 per tire for a decent tire. The least expensive that I saw today were $100 with everything, the most expensive were a very nice set of Yokahamas that run $580 for a set of four.

But this is something that we have to do, there's some major storms coming our way and I don't think the condition of my tires will work very well in heavy snow. We've been fortunate with mostly light snow, but that time is just about over.

That is because people have very little idea of the true costs of things. Sure, you can get a tire for $40 or $50 bucks, but when it bulges or blows out in the middle of Wyoming that's got added costs to it.

We've gotten away with as little as $150 for two good tires— but that's because they came from Les Schwab, which automatically provides a lifetime guarantee. And the annoying thing is, those tires were on the car when it was totalled, and were only a few months old. Did the insurance company give us credit for that? No. (We have a different provider now. Our old one did all the proper things, but grudgingly and far too slowly.)

We tend to buy our tires in pairs, which might change with this car since all of its tires are the same age and are rotated on a regular basis. Which reminds me that I need to start setting aside money now so we can buy new tires right before we drive to Worldcon in 2008.

Congrats on getting the car back. It sure took them long enough!

I agree with you about the tires. Knowing the kinds of conditions you will have to drive through, it's stupid (if not suicidal) to not get good ones. A couple of hundred bucks beats the medical (or funeral home) bills from a bad accident.

Ugh, I hear you. Two days before we make a road trip, we hit a pothole and lose a tire. There's a reason I made sure we had AAA for the road trip.
