If you didn’t see Shaolin Soccer, you missed an amazing film. I’ve been sitting here this evening sort of watching his next film, Kung Fu Hustle. Though hard for me to say, I am at a loss for words. This is an absolutely freakin’ amazing movie. The fights are awesome, very silly and corny, just the way a classic Chop Socky film should be. I think I recognize some of the cast form Soccer, and I’ll just leave it at SEE HIS FILMS if you like amazing kung fu. They are brilliant.

I say I’m only sort of watching it. I’m showing it for a bunch of friends Friday night, and the guy who bought it was having problems playing it on his DVD player, so we wanted to double-check and make sure it played ok on mine. Now I need you to double-check me on this. Yes, Xbox/PS2 play DVD movies in addition to games. Now, if you’ve been involved in a film club for over 20 years. He’s got a couple of good VCRs and for every film club showing he dubs several sneak previews from shows like Entertainment Tonight together so that we have sneaks for our club meetings.

And he doesn’t have a DVD player. He uses an Xbox, or PS/2, or whatever. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

ANYWAY, back to Chow.

WOW. I’m seeing stuff that makes effects for Matrix look like they were done 20 years earlier. Just some amazingly cool stuff, and a lot more fun. Then again, I’m not a Matrix fan.

Well, gotta go. I need to put time in at work via VPN for a project that we need to get out tomorrow.

Our PS2 is our primary dvd player. Why should anyone go through the misery of threading more cords than necessary? The tv already is borged to a cable box and a vcr -- there just ain't enough plugs and sockets to go around.

Our "real" dvd player is borged to our computers for purposes of vidding and screen captures. That's where playback quality is important to us.

Looking forward to (someday) seeing both Shaolin Soccer and Kung Fu Hustle. Sounds like they'd be a great double feature. I'll probably have to rent them from Blockbuster.

Okay, so I have an embarrassing question. Isn't Kung Fu Hustle scheduled to be released "in New York and Los Angeles" this week? Where did you get the dvd already? Or is this what was released overseas?

Yup, limited release is just starting. Dave bought the DVD from a distributor.

Thanks for the review. I'd seen the movie out in the store, but it looked just a bit too hokey for me to just pick up on a whim. I'll have to go back and see if I can snag a copy.
