No tricks, Bob Johnson's has some incredible deals on older computers and laptops that are still perfectly usable. If you are a serious computer geek and want to pick up a couple of extra PCs to mess with creating a software firewall, or need to set up a computer for a relative that will only be used web browsing, this is a great place for such things.

For the monthly laptop drawing, you must register at the following site on a monthly basis: they purge all entries after the drawing is held. You receive a confirmation email, and very little else: if you want, you can only enter the drawing and exclude all other email. I get probably four emails a month or so from them.

Thanks for mentioning this. I was recently talking to Ben about getting him set up with real internet access. I was thinking about giving him my old computer, but I don't know if he'd have problems since it has Windows 98 installed. I suspect that it may be too old for web-surfing now without major upgrades in hardware and software. This would be perfect, and if I get lucky enough to win a laptop, I can then give it to Ben and get him started. And besides, with all the clutter that Ben has at his house, a laptop would be much better than a desktop.

Yeah, a laptop would definitely work better for him. We could install a wireless router and then he wouldn't have the additional cable clutter.

I wouldn't have a problem giving him my old Toshiba, but the PC-CARD bays are dead, so it's hard getting wireless to work for it. And my Thinkpad is pretty fragile, so it's out of the question. Maybe I'll stumble across something viable at some point and we can see about perhaps taking up another collection like when we got him the WebTV.

At least we have Richard and Devin "The Creeper" in town to handle tech support since I don't live there anymore.
