One thing they don't mention - be sure to store your emergency kit someplace where you can get to it easily. A lot of people found that after the Northridge earthquake, their kits were inaccessible.

Excellent point. I suppose part of the concept is that in the event of a predictable disaster, you'd probably have the sense to have a big kit in the car and personal kits by the door. But for a no-warning disaster, it definitely changes things a bit.
