You must have ze papers! The US Post Office, at least here in Las Cruces, is having a passport day on Saturday to help people get everything done. You'll have to have a passport if you leave the US to any point, including a cruise to the Bahamas or crossing the border to Mexico or Canada. Even if you're on a ferry, you might have to have a passport.

Incidentally, when presenting papers for new employment, you can use your passport instead of your driver's license and SSN card. Such fun!

Anyway, here's a link on passport info: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cbpmc/cbpmc_2223.html#faqs. Saturday isn't a deadline, but with the number of people applying for passports, they're encouraging people to get it done soon. But your passport will be required in January 2008!

Now to find out if the PO in Alamogordo is doing the same thing...

Oh, and since we're on the topic of passports, there's a library in Vermont that part of the library is in the US, part is in Canada. Looks like the Border Patrol might have to do a crack-down! We're planning on going to Maine later in the year, I wonder if we can swing up to Vermont for the day? Gotta remember to bring my GPS!

I already have mine. I just renewed it last year.

Passports are really expensive, at least for the person who doesn't have much need for them or isn't going out of the country any time soon. Once a hint of an international trip shows up, though, I'm hauling arse down to the post office.

Just remember that you're right next to Canuckistan, and that is now formally an international trip! Just like I'm right next to Mexico.

True enough. And if I land somewhere relatively close to Canuckistan, I think I will want to have a passport handy, just in case I decide to nip across the border and visit people that I know. Assuming that they're somewhere close to the border.

Wayne. Dearest. Vermont is close to Maine by western standards, but there's a whole 'nother state between them. Not to mention that the major highways between all pass within suburban distance of Boston, resulting in another phenomenon we have little experience with in New Mexico: traffic jams.

I wonder if you can send your app to a specific office, or if it's like the IRS and you have to send it to specific regional offices?
