(For some reason LJ's mail submission system didn't get my post!)

I finally got bifocals.

I absolutely hated the thought. I’ve been wearing glasses since the 5th grade, and it could probably be argued that I needed them before that point. I’ve been having increasing problems the last couple of years reading really small print, it had gotten to the point that I would take off my glasses to read it. It became particularly acute in my network cabling class, it ain’t easy reading cable colors on 24 & 28 AWG wire when you’re looking for a pale blue or green stripe on a white cable crowded into a RJ-45 connector.

So a couple of weeks ago I went and got my eyes tested, bit the bullet (fortunately it didn’t go off) and got bifocals.

They’re progressive without a line, and I’ve adjusted to them just fine. I’ve had no problems reading, and I read a lot. But this morning is when I saw the first really positive example of how they help.

Take out a dollar bill. Look at the date. It may or may not be easy for you to read it. It was tough for me, and the reason why that’s important is because I log my folding money in Where’s George. This morning I had a few bills to log before I headed off to work, and I realized how easy it was to read the series (the formal name for the issue year).

So that was cool.

I also got a pair of sunglasses that are just great, I haven’t had good sunglasses in a long time. These aren’t progressive, I didn’t really see the need for them to be. I’m looking forward to doing some driving this summer!

A better title for your post would have been: "Don't Fear the Peeper!"

I've technically had glasses since I was 16, and bifocals since I was about 40ish. I say "technically" because I need glasses to do artwork but find them unsuitable beyond that. In fact, I've largely switched over to grocery-store magnifiers and find they do the job nicely. The opticians/opthamologists who've tested me over the years keep asking "Don't you get headaches without your glasses?" to which I reply "I get headaches when I *do* wear them." Mostly I do without. I can't read fine print any more without *some*thing, but except for the occasional reference book at the library I can't help a patron decipher, I haven't felt the lack. Good on you for adapting to the progressive lenses so quickly!
