Deep packet inspection -- some computer networking geekery

Some information on how ISPs are updating their core routers to comply with the law requiring them to cooperate with police information requests. Basically, short of encrypting all of the traffic leaving your computer, your ISP can read anything and at real-time speeds.

Nice to know that not only will they be able to read whatever comes through, all the way down to the packet level, that they can also then decide to do very negative and non-neutral things to the traffic running on their networks. I expect to see more of the threats of downgraded service than the federal government listening in on our lives. I could be wrong, though - there might be just as much federal snooping.
