I did actually read the updated Jolly Roger version at that age, and only found the phreaking part to be of any real use, not that I ever tried any of it. It's one of the many ways I found out why 2600 is named the way it is.
I have a story about 2600! Back when I was working for the police department, an FBI agent was giving a talk about hacking out in Mesa, so I went out to see it. He mentioned 2600 and tried to talk authoritatively about the origin, mentioning the Captain Crunch whistle, then saying that he didn't know if it was megahertz or kilohertz or what. Now, ignoring the fact that I'm an amateur radio operator, I know the range of human hearing is from approximately 20 Hz to 20 KHz, I piped up and said it was Hertz. He made a joke that because I knew that that I must be a hacker.
He lost all credibility with me at that point, and the rest of his presentation pretty much confirmed that.
I came close to standing up and saying that I had X years experience with the police department, that I understood audio and radio electronics, and am not a hacker before leaving the hall.
What a twit. He may have been trying to be funny, but he did it in an insulting way, and you shouldn't insult people whom you do not know. For that matter, you shouldn't be deliberately insulting to people that you do know, unless they know you're doing it in a funny way, and even that is risky.
Ah. I'm sure that agent helps to explain why the federal government seems fairly unable to find their own arse with two hands and a map when it comes to electronic measures.
