But they're scrapping technology! Technology is good, isn't it?

"Florida Governor Charlie Crist is getting his wish. The New York Times reports the state will replace touch-screen voting machines with optical-scan models by July 1, 2008 — the most aggressive timetable of any jurisdiciton rethinking this approach to voting. The touch-screen machines most likely will be sold to other jurisdictions or stripped for parts."

I can't imagine they're going to get any particular value out of stripping them for parts.

Optical scan is perhaps the current best tradeoff for reliability and speed— you've got a paper trail AND an instant tally. We use it in my county and I really can't see why they bother with more complicated, failure-prone ideas when they've got such a straightforward one.

Jokes about the scanner being a shredder notwithstanding...

LOL. Yeah, my mom works elections in Phoenix, and I'm currently writing ASPX code that is going to be used to display tallys for our November election in city council chambers and for the web site. It's been more than a PITA as our web guy was fired so I'm developing web sites with zero experience in it.

Lots of fun!

We do have an electronic machine for handicapped people, they mark their choices on a computer of some sort and it marks the ballot for them. I look forward to seeing it, it sounds pretty cool.
