IIRC, Lucious Fox was added to the Batman cast (in the comics) sometime in the late Sixties or early Seventies. He was one of the top executives at Wayne Industries who was very competent at his job and very loyal to Bruce Wayne. The character quickly grew to be the number two man at Wayne Industries, and his competence freed Bruce Wayne from many of the business problems that would have taken away from his time spent as Batman. Granted, I have not seen the movie yet but I've heard that Lucious Fox in the movie helps Bruce Wayne become the Batman, either with training or acquiring equipment (or both, as I was told this before the movie premiered). I'll pass judgment on that change after I see the movie.
I believe that Lucious Fox was added to the Batman cast (in the comics) to provide a recurring character who was Black and a positive role model (i.e., one of the good guys). And that was a good thing as it always bothered me that everyone in the Superman cast (as well as in Archie) were as white as ... uh, as ... sorry, but my metaphor well has gone dry. Let's just say that it bothered me that there were no racial minorities at all and leave it at that, okay?
