Malfunctioning car electronics cause large number of cars in area to be unusable

Basically one car had a faulty wireless entry system which (apparently) started broadcasting white noise on the frequency used by many other wireless entry systems, effectively jamming them. Unfortunately the car owner had parked the car for his daily commute to work.

Did these people not know that there is a fall-back technology of inserting the key into the lock and turning it....?
