A breakdown of three different survival kits ranging in size from an Altoids tin to a fanny pack. Of course, it helps if you know what you're doing and how to use the components of said kits!

Yeah. And the first two kits lack calories to get you started in case the fish don't bite and there aren't edible plants around. So while it's neat to see hwo compact they can get, I'm not sure they're all that useful when not paired with other things.

They're definitely not universal, as you point out with the fishing. That would be all but worthless where I live: if you could find a river, you would be able to find people. It's like the snare that they include, how the heck am I supposed to use that to catch small game? Robinson Crusoe I ain't!

To experienced hunters/fishermen, I think they would get more value out of it. I think the final one that sports an MRE and breakfast bars would be far more practical to keep in your car.

Yeah - I like the last one best as it looks like something that an average person could at least survive some on. Admittedly, if I were forced to be a survivalist, I'd fail out miserably through lack of knowledge, so this is academic.

You can buy really compact survival kits for the car with water and rations for like 6 days online. I posted a link about them a little while ago because Holly and I were talking about how we need to get some.

I've actually seen smaller ones. One I saw was all packed into an empty zippo lighter. It's one of those competetion things among nature/boyscout types, seeing how many things they can get into an altoids box.

And then at the moment of truth, hopefully they remember how to use all the stuff they've packed into that Zippo.
