You thought that was an editing gaffe? I thought it was a deliberate choice. We saw the start of a fight which did not include a punch in the eye. Admittedly, what we saw could have been the entire fight, but I didn't have a problem with the implication that more fighting (and a punch in the eye) happened after we left the scene.
And I thought the closet scene was VERY cool. Incomprehensible alien instruction manual for your new dog-thing!
