"If a larrikin bashed a tall poppy from the big end of town and his mate dobbed him in, he might tell the police the identity was a shonky operator. The identity, no doubt, would try to hose it down as a furphy."

This is the opening paragraph from an article on Australian slang, kinda cool, and it can be viewed here, mate.

i don't have much of an accent anymore... i got sick of people asking me to repeat myself. though when my parents were here, the local staff kept asking what language we were speaking as they had no idea what we (particularly my father) was saying but "thought that australians spoke english". :)

one of my favorite sentences while abroad was "bevensa northan bogan isinit?" (cairo pub, 2004)... it was at that point that all the non-australians left the conversation. :)

My Aussie goes as far as "Tie me kangaroo down, sport", "waltzing matilda" (and I know what that phrase represents), and accurate memory of Monty Python's Philosophy Department sketch. I'm not quite as good at Australian Fighting Wines, but I like it nonetheless.

And then there's "Ace." My brother particularly liked it so as to be able to insult people while throwing darts without them knowing it. :-)

I used to do quite a good Aussie accent, I'm rather out of practice now. All of my accents have deteriorated as I'm in a rural area with lots of Texans, my accent keeps shifting.
