Sony claims SOE and PSN hacks were the work of Anonymous

Yeah. Apparently the intruders left behind a file named Anonymous containing the phrase "We are legion.", the Anonymous calling card phrase.

It's so utterly inconceivable that a group of criminals wouldn't leave behind a red herring to distract management that is incapable of rational thought. [/sarcasm]

It isn't remotely like previous operations/pranks/hacks done by Anonymous, they've never done a hack just for money as far as I know, and they've always been quite public about what they do which is part of their signature. Nope, gotta look a little further afield, Sony.

Well, Anonymous had gone after Sony for going after a hacker trying to allow jailbreaking a Sony game system to allow installing Linux. Sony used to allow that, but they decided they'd make more money denying it. This guy tried to restore that feature, and they sued him.

So it must be Anonymous trying some weird attack that's completely out of character for them. Accusing Anonymous couldn't just be the Honest Businessmen of Sony trying to deflect blame for their own incompetence and smear a group that pointed out how greedy and evil they were. No Honest Businessman would ever consider such underhanded action.

I can recall Anonymous doing DDoS against Scientology and Sony and other orgs that denied funding for Wikileaks, and they tore apart HB Gary Federal's web site and posted the information online. So obviously Anonymous is expanding their repertoire of their offensive operations in order to provide riches for their volunteers to continue perpetrating their nefarious agenda.

Because this totally fits the pattern of an Anonymous attack, to have credit card data and other financial information stolen and not then posted somewhere, and without a big statement about the malfeasance of the company. Yeah, Sony, why not investigate instead of scapegoat?
