These are a few of my favorite things

Too much negativism of late, so I thought I’d post a couple of good things.

The Sound of Silence I have a favorite ritual that I like to perform when I get home at night. I park the car, turn it off, turn off the lights, and just sit.

With the exception of my tinnitus, it is absolutely silent. It is absolutely dark. All that is in front of me is black national forest. It is wonderfully peaceful.

Unfortunately you can’t sit in the car all night, eventually I have to go inside. That wouldn’t be a negative, but Russet’s going to be staying at the observatory a lot of this winter while she works, so it will be an empty house (except for the poodle) when I go inside.


Warm Towels.I don’t know when we’ll be turning on the heater, but it gets a little nippy here. Currently I think the nights are in the mid to high 40’s. So we have oil-based space heaters in the bathroom and living room. The one in the living room is currently off, but the one in the bathroom I’ve got the timer set so that it’s on when I’m likely to be getting up and showering. I’ve taken to lying my towel across it as I’m getting ready to shower, so when I get out of said shower, I have a nice warm towel to dry with.

I’ve always wanted a towel warmer, and now I have improvised one!


Sometimes little things give you a lot more than you’d expect.

Ya might wanna be a bit careful with tossing the towel over the oil space heater. I know someone who set their bedroom on fire doing that. A safer thing to do is just put the towel on the floor in front of the heater.

I keep a very close eye on it, I don't leave the room while the towel is on it. Also, the heater trips and shuts off shortly after I put the towel on it: apparently it has a safety shut off if it sees too much heat reflected back on it, so the towel is really being warmed by the then-stored heat.
