One day, two external hard drive deaths

thewayneYesterday I needed to reformat one of my 500 gig externals to a Windows format to copy a Parallels VM image from a Sony laptop. So I dug out my LaCie 500 gig Firewire/USB. Couldn't reformat it. SMART status said it was OK, but there was clearly a problem.
So I dug out my second drive. I've been using a Western Digital 500 gig that did both Firewire and USB, had to switch to USB-only when I got my Air. Copied off the directories on it that didn't exist elsewhere, and tried to reformat it. It failed.
I did get a nice tax return deposited in to my account last week, but I hadn't planned on buying new hardware with it!
