I don't have an answer. They banned high-capacity magazines for a decade and there was no perceptible change in the homicide rate. Banning a category of guns is a very nebulous proposition. The one thing that they don't talk about is trying to improve the mental health care of the American public.

My wife said that the Newtown shooter had tried to purchase a gun not long before the event and was turned down. But since his mom had a small collection, it made little difference.

Yep. And the NRA continued to talk about just about anything they could get their hands in except for guns. It was likened to a Rickroll on one show.
