Of my married friends, the ones who are childless vastly outnumber those with children. I'd peg the numbers at four couples with children out of 15-20, and two of those marriages ended in divorce, so they're now broken homes. The reasons for no progeny vary from family history of schizophrenia to a dismal view of where the world is heading. My wife and I tried to have children but it didn't happen. So I guess according to Bill, we're not really married.

I'm also amused by his specific 'two men'. No mention of women. So I guess he's okay with IVF but not adoption?

Yeah, to me that's always been an argument that quickly eats itself. If marriage=procreation, we'd better ban it for childfree types, infertile individuals, women over 45 or so, and on and on and on.

Historically, of course, he has a point - marriage tended to be more about politics than love. It could be argued that remains the case, where there's power and money at play.

The bit he'd like to forget is that marriages weren't, even then, always exclusively between men and women. ^_^

I sometimes suspect that some of these homophobes never mention lesbian relationships because of some movies they have enjoyed viewing in the past. Maybe a few magazines, too.

Also, if marriage is for children, then can we decouple all the state benefits that come with marriage?
