First snow
Oct. 30th, 2015 11:25 pmIt's been raining a lot up here recently, and today it was finally cold enough to change the state. My wife and I were in Alamogordo for most of the day and it was all gone when we got home, which was pretty much what I expected. Looks like it'll be below freezing overnight, but no precip.
I've been wanting to note when it starts snowing up here, and I thought this would be an easy way to do it.

Date: 2015-11-01 01:23 pm (UTC)Well, it depends. We live in Cloudcroft, and we have a ski run called Ski Cloudcroft, but I doubt they've had a proper season since '10. Which is a pity because they installed a wood-fired pizza oven but they only run it June through September.
Nearby there's Sierra Blanca, which has obvious connotations and lots of snow, but I don't know if they have ski runs. The Taos and Santa Fe area is usually pretty reliable for skiing since they're pretty close to the Colorado border.
We'll typically see 0f or close to it a few times a winter, the worst I've personally seen was a three day snap of -20f in '10. That was interesting. I actually didn't think it was too bad because we didn't have any wind or any other weather with it, it was just brutally cold. It caused a LOT of damage down in the valley, no one was expecting it and lots of pipes got burst. The gas company didn't notify the university that they were shutting off the run, and the uni didn't get a chance to drain the broilers and they burst. instant lawsuit. It shut down half of one building for about two years.
