Man, what a shocker losing two greats in one week, and both from cancer, and both age 69.

The first movie that I saw him in was Die Hard, he was such a great villain. But I really loved him in January Man with Kevin Kilne. And, of course, he was the definitive Snape in the Potter films.

Personally I think he would have made an excellent Lord Ventinari for Discworld movies, but now that will never happen.

I think where he really first came to my attention was in Galaxy Quest. His delivery was just a delight throughout. "By Grabthar's Hammer.. [long, wearied pause] what a savings."

Lord Vetinari! FSM, yes. Ah well. They did at least manage to get Christopher Lee as Death, a quite perfect piece of casting.

I loved the bit when they beam down to the planet and he starts talking about how the captain is about to do unnecessary shoulder rolls and tear his shirt. It's been coming up often on BBC America of late, but I should dig out my DVD and watch the best version.

BTW, if you have the DVD, did you know about the Thermian additional audio track? It rates as one of my favorite supplemental materials, right there with Monty Python and the Holy Grail's alternate subtitling of Shakespeare's Henri IV, Part 2.
