In October we replaced my 2005 Toyota Matrix AWD (a Corolla Hatchback in some non-US markets) with a 2015 Subaru Crosstrek. I absolutely love this car! A couple of weeks ago I dropped $1,000 for a full set of snow tires, of course it hasn't snowed since then. Anyway, I bought it in Tucson, AZ which meant that the title initially had to be done in AZ and I had to contact the lender, which is in Texas, to get Arizona to send the title to New Mexico, which for some reason took over a month and a half. Yesterday I FINALLY got the call from MVD that they had received the title from Arizona MVD, it was about 3:15 and they close at 4:00, so I waited until today to go in. I had all the papers that I needed. We do the VIN check, the woman is banging away on the computer, pulls open a drawer and produces a license plate:

NRD 512

I all but swooned! Nerd and a power of 2! (2 to the 9th) Absolutely awesome license plate! I can't imagine a better, random, license plate!

Then her computer froze. Every computer in the office froze: the network was completely down, same thing happened yesterday. She said I'd have to come back, but since the VIN inspection was done, it wouldn't take too long when I got back. I asked her if I'd get the same license plate.

She said no.

*sigh*

So I go to lunch (Carl's Jr. has fish tacos again!) Go back to the MVD office, they call my number and I go to the designated window and the woman, after I explain everything, says I have to wait until the woman with whom I'd worked previously was done with her customer.

Eventually she's free, we resume the paperwork, and she pulls out my new license plate.

NRD 512!

Simple things please simple minds. I'm very happy, and I'm mounting it on my car today.

Carl's Jr? Dear me. You need to try the shrimp burritos at Fins, over in San Diego. =:9 (Though, admittedly, I'm a total sucker for a plain ol' carne asada super burrito with extra meat from El Farolito, by the 24th St BART, yours for something like $7, and pretty much good for two meals, unless you're really hungry)

There is something about powers of two. ^_^ But then, I grew up designing sprites on graph paper.. which does leave me with the surprisingly marketable skill of being able to read SPI conversations on a logic analyzer without needing it to convert the stream to hex first. =:)

Hmm. Does the format permit NRD 0X101? Or maybe NRD 101H?

Rather cool the allocation hadn't changed in the meantime, definitely. ^_^

In San Diego my #1 eating place was Casa De Pico. Unfortunately they were in the Old Town complex, which was turned over to 'managers' from Delaware who tripled rents and drove everyone out. The woman running it had another place across the street called Casa Guadalajara, which I understand is still doing booming business. She was supposed to open a place at Seaport Village, but I don't know if that happened, I'd heard there were difficulties.

For seafood, I'd go down to the fish market at Seaport. Another place that I quite liked was the Gaslamp Strip Club. They would sell you raw meat plus prepared sides and you go to grilling stations to cook it and season it. Very good.

The last time that I spent a significant amount of time in San Fran was in 1981, I don't know where we went to then. I remember we went to a theater and saw Empire Strikes Back, rode mopeds around Candlestick Park, and went to an amazing game store. I passed through San Fran in 1991 and 2001, but didn't spend any significant time, much less eating there. Now? I don't know if I'd feel sanguine about entering the city. I'm beginning to become a little skittish about major cities, I've been living in low density areas for a decade and it's changing me a bit.

You could do the 101H as we have seven character license plates, but 0x101 wouldn't work. I knew a guy who had 010101, I was slightly envious.

Got another story for you, but have to get ready for work, so it'll come later.
