It's been an interesting couple of days with the passing of both Harper Lee and Umberto Eco, but I wanted to share this, which is something that a lot of people don't know about:

Harper Lee was instrumental in nudging Berk Breathed in resurrecting Bloom County.

She sent him a note pleading with him to continue producing Outland, and though it took a while, eventually he brought it back.

Berk posted this on his Facebook page today:

Thank you, Harper Lee. Bloom County is an excellent comic, and I always enjoyed whenever Opus was around.

Saw that on Mr. Breathed's FB, great stuff--I had no idea. I did read TKAM, and it does deserve its reputation. The film was pretty darn good too. I have no interest in the sequel/prequel/whatever, because it seemed so clear to me it was a case of an exploitative money-grab as soon as her sister/guardian passed away. Just shameful.

I didn't even hear Eco had passed away as well! I think the only thing of his I read was a collection of essays called How To Travel With a Salmon, but it was pretty good.
