I have a history of sleepwalking. No big deal, it happened a fair amount as a kid and not much as an adult. Nowadays I may wake up wearing/not wearing a t-shirt that I wasn't/was wearing when I went to bed. No big deal.

Yesterday was interesting. I woke up wearing my watch. On my left wrist. Right off the bat this was weird because I always take my watch off when I go to bed. On top of that, most people who wear a watch wear it on their opposite hand, and I always wear mine on my right wrist. And my watch currently has a metal band and my left hand is larger than my right, so I had to wriggle it on and secure the clasp, while remaining deep asleep.

Weird. I blame it on Trump. At first I suspected the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, but they lack motive.

(name the movie the previous sentence came from for bonus points)

There's a rather good story out there on the theme, taking as its premise that while sleepwalking, your conscious mind is out of the way, and thus, if you could be kept permanently in such a state, you'd be at any controller's mercy. The transition to that takeover, seen a few times, but especially the first two occasions, was disturbingly convincing, as they sink into a more dreamy state of mind, still feeling resolved to withstand this attack, only to be eventually told that indeed, they've already been subverted, and their ability to resist is no more.

You do wear a watch, then? I gave up on such a while back, as I realised I had clocks all around me during the day. It wasn't so much that I decided to stop wearing them, though, so much as.. I think the strap may've broken, and I just sort of never got around to doing anything about it.

That said, I can perhaps see picking up an Apple Watch in the future, particularly if the coming years go well - having easy notification of a call or message would be handy, if they're then in my usual comms mix. (Myself, I'm very much more one for email) And hereabouts, I could even see using the trail tracker they demoed at the recent launch - handy to be able to just know where you are along a trail at some junction rather than having to fish out the phone. Just a pity they couldn't fit cellular connectivity in this time around, but I'm sure that's just a matter of time - it's a huge challenge just getting where they are now and maintaining useful battery life, without throwing a radio transceiver into the mix.

Regrettably, I can't place the quote, though it feels vaguely familiar. ^_^;

I saw a French animated movie called Phantom Boy that was based around out of body experiences, but not sleepwalking. It certainly has been explored in movies.

I wore a very nice Seiko through the '90s that I absolutely loved. It had a stopwatch, a timer, and an alarm. And the most important thing -- it was ANALOG. I was kind of frustrated of only viewing digital displays, I guess I'm more accepting of them now.

ANYWAY, I learned of the Pebble watch and just missed getting in on the fist Kickstarter. Then I heard of the second Kickstarter in which they were funding the Pebble Time, the main difference was a color display. Then during the Kickstarter, they introduced the Pebble Time Steel -- a steel housing!

I really wanted that steel housing as my Seiko died when my sweat ate through the base metal housing and ultimately the interior corroded. The stainless steel back was just fine. It really pissed me off that $300 of '90s money wouldn't buy you a sweat-proof watch.

The Pebble intrigued me as it had a free API for writing your own apps an watch faces. I especially liked a particular watchface that allowed me to see what time it was without my reading glasses! But the big thing was that I was sick and tired of digging out and waking up my phone every time I wanted to know what time it was. And the vibrating alarm on my wrist was excellent for letting me know that my lunch hour was nearing its end and I needed to head back to work (when I had a job earlier this year) or an alarm set to head to a movie or something. And I find the countdown timer great for naps -- usually I like a 20-25 minute nap, and I can have it wake me with zero risk of disturbing my wife.

So yes, I do wear a watch. Because it's a ePaper-like display, it mainly consumes current when the display changes, thus it is good for typically ten days between charges. Suck it, Apple Watch and your two day charge time! I usually charge mine weekly over Saturday night, just as that is a convenient time.

I have actually disabled most notifications through my watch as I find them distracting. It's the reading glasses problem -- it comes up with a name of whoever is calling me or texting me or whatever, and I can't read it. So pluses and minuses.

And it's a heck of a lot less expensive than Apple's offering!

I bought in to the next Kickstarter and in a few weeks will receive a new Pebble Time Steel with a larger display (YAY!) AND a pulsemeter! I'm not a fitness freak, but I do have a casual interest in getting baselines of my pulse, assuming it can be trusted. I want it mainly for the larger display.

A hint for the movie: early Woody film, and though he appears in it twice, he didn't make the movie.
