croptoptux is coming over from Tumblr and seems to have quite the knowledge of Classic Chinese and Japanese, and unless I'm missing my guess, is an anime fan and also involved in AO3?

Russia is making moves so that they can isolate themselves from the internet. They are requiring Russian web sites to use Russian DNS instead of DNS providers outside of Russia. The fact that this gives Russia more filtering and spying options on internet traffic is entirely besides the point.

This is a preliminary move to Russia completely cutting themselves off from the rest of the online world. They have not announced an intention to do so, but they have the capability and have tested and demonstrated this over the last few years. So they can do it.

And if your blog is on Live Journal, that means it will no longer be accessible if Putin brings down the internet iron curtain. The servers for LJ are physically located in Russia and have been since 2017 - that's why I moved to DW.

Dreamwidth is written on the same codebase as Live Journal from back at a certain point in time, they've diverged somewhat since then, and DW has an import function that will bring in all of your posts, photos, everything. I did this five years ago and it was very smooth and pretty fast. And even though it's been shut off for a few weeks now, in normal times you can have your posts automatically cross-post to your LJ account.

I'm encouraging all my LJ friends to either migrate to Dreamwidth, or post other places where we can find you in case Putin makes LJ unavailable to us.
