I just made some major changes to my LJ settings

So basically, only people who are currently friends will be able to reply to posts.  I just received a comment, in Russian, to a post that I made a decade ago.  It was clearly spam, though oddly it did not have a correctly-formed URL in the message.

Very odd.

I read that there's a way to easily make all posts private, I haven't found that yet.  But when I do, that'll happen.

It's under Settings-Privacy- default entries security You can change to friends only as your default. I use this in my plush journal to discourage trolling.

And you can set up filters to include only certain people or groups of people you might want to direct a post to.
