Date: 2019-05-02 06:35 am (UTC)Good question. I read your comment a few hours ago and have been mulling over what I would say, and I'm still not absolutely certain how I stand. I think I will say that I consider in this usage for them to be largely synonymous, but perhaps not in every usage. But I also freely admit to not being an English major, and my usage is not always absolutely correct. I will also defend my lack of absolute correctness by saying there are regional variances and English is an evolving and somewhat malleable language. So maybe we're both correct. :-)

Then add some Australian influences later in life. Compound that by me being a fundamentally silly person, as if you couldn't gather that from reading my posts and interacting with me for some time here on DW, and there's no telling where my usages come from!
