You're standed on a desert island and you were only able to rescue a dozen DVDs (a dozen because the layout for ten looks stupid). Fortunately your DVD player and TV can be solar-powered. What movies would you take?

Here's mine: (under the cut)

I KNEW Blue Velvet would be on your list! I would have liked to put Fish Called Wanda on mine, but I would rather have Life of Brian.

At least I've seen 10 of your 12. I meant to mention that boxed collections like the Star Wars box set weren't allowed, you had to take individual ones. But I didn't, so it's moot. :-)

I think I'd go for Tank Girl over Barb Wire. It's a strange thing to say that you find a Pamela Anderson movie stupid. :-) But I'm also a huge Malcolm McDowell fan.

I've only seen five of your dozen. I've always thought that you could learn a lot about a person by their video library.

well you want variety if you've only got a couple. barbwire worked for me on so many different levels... and it would be good to compare and contrast with casablanca which is why they're both in there. i had it on video when i was still living in australia and had easily watched it over ten times. :)

mr nice guy is the only one on your list that i haven't seen... and i loved galaxy quest.

Mr. Nice Guy, In My Ever So Humble Opinion, is one of the best Jackie Chan flicks ever for several reasons: it was filmed in Melbourne and NSW, it was directed by Sammo Hung (sadly there's not a huge amount of 'inter-production', for want of a better term, between Jackie and Sammo), and I think it has one of the better stories. Oh, and it has THE BEST EVAH monster truck scene!

Definitely check it out!

(oh, and Sammo does a cameo appearance)

I don't know that I'd pick that particular set, but all of them are ones I've seen and liked. I was pleasantly surprised to see Seven Samurai in your list, too!

I have quite a collection of Kurosawa on DVD and laser disc, including: Dersu Uzula, Ran, Yojimbo, Rashamon, Dreams, and probably a couple more. Rashamon always rates highly with Kurosawa for me, and Dreams is an excellent film, one of his last before his death. Very moving film.

Sweet. I've been wanting to see more of his films. Unfortunatley, they're harder to find on DVD than 7 Samurai. I'll keep those you listed in mind.

Sorry about that. That was my comment. I forgot to log in again....

Heh. No problem.

Dersu Uzula is a very obscure film. It was made after he had sort of become persona non grata in the Japanese film industry. He was in poor health, and he attempted suicide. Fortunately he did not succeed. The film was financed by the Russians, filmed in Siberia, and it is his only film that won an Academy Award though several were nominated. It's entirely in Russian. And it revitalized his career.

Ran is sort of King Lear, Yojimbo was the original Fistful of Dollars, Rashomon is a great film that was also remade into a western. Dreams was one of his last films, it's a collection of short features based on his memories and dreams of childhood. One segment has Martin Scorsese as Vincent Van Goh.

Another pair of Kurosawa films that I'd recommend is Throne of Blood, an amazing film considered perhaps the best cinematic treatment of Shakespeare ever, it basically is MacBeth done Samurai-style. And then there's Hidden Fortress which was a major inspiration for George Lucas to make Star Wars, also an excellent film.

I didn't know Wasabi was a Luc Besson film. I'm going to have to look for it, sounds good.

Of course, if you asked me next week I'm sure that my list would be slightly different.

I'd play the game if I had something like a Netflix list to choose from. I am *sadly* deficient when it comes to actually remembering the names of films. I'd wind up with 12 things I could recall the titles of, not necessarily what I'd actually want to watch over and over... :P

Just had to go with the small icons so that us semi-blind types can't hardly see what you posted, eh?! :-)

I considered La Femme Nikita, but then I had to consider The Professional and Transporter. I decided Fifth Element was good enough. When I was describing The Evil That Shall Be Part II to my wife, I found out that she thoroughly hates Fifth Element, so I guess I'll be watching it by myself in the future.

LOL I thought about adding Transporter because I really do love that movie, but since I included The Italian Job, I could get my Jason Stratham fix that way. :) I wanted to include Akira instead of Cowboy Bebop, but couldn't find it listed.

LOL and I thought the large icons would be too big so I went with small.

I'm sure there's something I've left off that I'd probably rather have than what is listed, but it's the end of the work day and the brain has turned to mush.
