Another site for free college text books!
May. 14th, 2024 02:21 pmOpenStax is a part of Rice University developing free books for K-12 and university application. The books are mostly geared towards 101-level coursework and don't cover a huge number of subjects, for example, only two computer science titles are listed. One is an Introduction to Python, I downloaded it (400 pages) and looked over the TOC and I approve of the structure of instruction. I'd like to see things covered more deeply, but for a 101 book, I think it's quite adequate. I'll take a look at the astronomy book next (1100 pages), it's been a good twenty years since I took an intro on that class.
Still, it's a beginning!
The books are free to download (PDF) or access online and can be used by instructors in classroom settings as long as proper copyright attribution is maintained.

Date: 2024-05-15 03:50 am (UTC)The price of college textbooks has become astronomical. There are several such programs to produce open source books that are good for at least intro classes. Apparently we're using their astronomy book, and we have used a similar open source Spanish text book for L1 and L2 Spanish!
