thewayneSo first a little talk about version numbers. Programs are written with version numbers, which lets the company keep track of the source code that produced it. This lets them patch specific versions and proceed from known good points and also bring problematic code into the known good version. These numbers are incremented as the code continues to be written. I'm not going to provide examples of what version numbers look like as they vary from company to company.
I don't understand it completely, but something got screwed up with Microsoft's version numbers, some sort of crossover happened and the net result is that several programs went unpatched for several months this year. Thus, today's patch dump updates a lot of stuff going back literal months. And this stuff has been exploited, so this is important! The Krebs article has more information as to what programs were affected by this problem.
There are also updates for Windows 11, Krebs does not mention any exploits going on for that OS.
Also, Adobe patched their core products, but say that there were no known exploits going on.

Date: 2024-09-12 01:03 am (UTC)In a semi-unrelated topic, for writing papers and such, I use the date as the version number (ie. the version written today is v24.09.11). My last submission for Ethics (which is now being submitted for the 3rd or 4th time), one of the things I got pinged on was that I needed a version number as well as version date. I guess version number has to be a simple, natural integer. Well, an integer. Not sure if version 0 or -1 or even square-root-of-minus-one are acceptable.

Date: 2024-09-12 04:00 am (UTC)You could use the sequential date number. Today is the 254th day of the year in non-leap years, so for today you could use 24254, pad the 254 with zeroes for dates before mid-April. Wikipedia will give you the day number if you enter September whatever.
