This woman made popcorn with bacon grease....

Some of the suggestions that people provided sound absolutely wonderful!

I know you're a vegan, but I am definitely omnivorous and I was pretty sure Monkey Girl was likewise. Sorry! But there are plenty of vegan meals bandied about on Food Porn, you might like it....

And I thought it was *harumph!*, or is that just an Aussie thing? ;-)

Hahahahahahahahaha.... no, haraam means 'forbidden' in Islamic-speak. Just as halal is like kosher. And since mgd and I are 'Muslim culture' specialists, I thought I would remind her. :)

And I'm not vegan. Just a pescatarian (I eat seafood). I also let myself eat meat once a month. :)

Ah! I'm definitely ignorant on many things involving Islamic culture. I knew pork was forbidden, just didn't know the word. I'm familiar with kosher, didn't know that word for it, either. I'd also never heard of pescatarian, I knew of the lacto/ovo subcultures of vegitarianism, but not the seafood version.

Interesting shtuff. Is the once a month meat thing enough to prevent some of the problems that I've heard of re: being a vegetarian? I could easily be mistaken on that, too, can't say that I've ever studied vegetarianism extensively, or even casually, for that matter. :-)

Heh. Er... no, I don't think with the 'modern' technology we have in dietary supplements and whatnot, that there would by any problems with not eating meat. Vegans have problems as they don't have ANY animal protein at all. But once you include eggs, dairy and seafood... then hell, tis all there.

My once-a-month meat eating is purely out of weakness. I'm Chinese, you see. And well, to be brutally frank, Chinese cuisine is at its best with duck, pork and chicken. And 'sif I'm going to turn my back on my culture. Pfffft... So for 12 days a year, I put aside my conscience and EAT MEAT.

Though I have to say, I can no longer eat beef, lamb or goat. The flavours are too 'meaty' after even part-time pescatariansim, and make me want to retch. :P

And yeah, my last boyfriend (or current boyfriend... he has yet to decide) is Muslim, and engages in much haraam behaviour. *tsk tsk*. Yep, including me.

Bummer about the lamb! I love lamb chops. How about duck? There's a French restaurant near here that does a very nice duck breast and plum sauce.

Yeah, I knew you were Asian from your vacation photos, not enough detail for me to really see if you were Chinese or what. My friend [livejournal.com profile] magic_rat used to work at a comic book store taking care of their mail-order side. He was used to getting a call from an Aussie who placed large orders on a regular basis. One call the Aussie tells him that he's going to be in Phoenix and would like to come by the store and meet him. So they arrange a meeting and the guy comes by the store. Both Magic Rat and the guy are dumb-struck: they were both pure ethnic Japanese, one Australian, one Hawaiian/Texan with an Arizona (lack of) accent. Neither had a clue.

Unrelated, but a good story.

Hahahahahahaha... How about that!?

I have a reasonably strong Australian accent, and no Asian accent at all. I have had phone and email contact with some people professionally, and when I met up with them, they kinda say "Wow, I thought you were anglo". It's so ridiculous, given my name. *sigh*.

One person has even said "Oh, *disappointed*. I thought you were a real Australian". I was like *wtf*?

Duck.... ooooooh. My favourite is stewed duck with chestnuts, done Chinese style. Or Peking duck. Or roast duck. The Chinese and French know duck well indeed.

"...a real Australian."

BWAHAHAHA!

What, are you a replicant or something? Yeah, that's definitely a WTF moment.

I was in Atlanta for a week of training and one of the women in the class was Chinese. 5'8", pure Texan in accent and attitude. That really gave my head a twist! (I've always liked Asian women, though I never dated one, and I ended up marrying a woman who is pure Scottish)

Ya never know who's on the other end of the phone. Make all the assumptions that you want, just don't be surprised if they're 10' tall and green. (or as Tom Lehrer put it: "Eight foot two, solid blue, five transisters in each shoe: Has anybody seen my girl?")

I think I need to go to bed... :-)

I didn't know whether to use the "dubious" icon or the "yum!" one... while bacon grease sounds feasible (I thought they'd be using it to pop the popcorn, not to drizzle on afterwards like butter), some of those other choices would make me gag. ;)

Since animal fats, in particular, are rather off my diet right now(!), I'm probably going to forget about this before I ever get a chance to try it. :(

I misread the original post, I thought she cooked the popcorn in bacon grease, not drizzled it on afterwards. I'd go for my version, not hers. ;-)

Yeah, definitely not on your diet for the time being!
