Lincoln National Forest is closed. No hiking, no camping, no hunting, no nothing.

Formerly living in Arizona, forest and brush fires are kind of common place. It's a different story when your house is literally in the forest and surrounded by trees. I guess the closure order is to reduce the risk of a man-made fire wiping out Cloudcroft, we'll see what happens.

Wow. That's serious. I don't think they've ever closed the entire Lincoln National Forest during my lifetime. Parts of it on occasion and certain years had fire restrictions, but this is major.

My Dad tells me the drought there is beyond bad. He converted his lawn to a rock lawn because it's all dirt now. What a shame.

We've never had a lawn per se. The back yard drops off rapidly as we're on the top of a mountain, and the front yard has too many trees to be viable to mow.

Yeah, it's bad. We're going to be leaving in two weeks for a 5000 mile trip to VA and OH that'll last 2 or 3 weeks, we'll be taking Russet's car to the observatory to theoretically keep it safe in case the town burns. Of course, if the observatory burns and the town doesn't.... :-)

Wow....that's pretty severe. I'll keep my fingers crossed for nothing bad to happen. Having your house burned down would just completely suck!

We'll have the truly critical stuff in a storage locker in town that should be safe against burning, nothing fuel-like around them. But we can't put everything in there, so it would suck regardless.

In some ways, though, the thought of starting clean does appeal. Get rid of all the crap that you've accumulated over your life and see where your life takes you from there. A good way to study Buddhism and no attachment to posessions, neh? :-)

True enough, though I don't think the traditional Buddhist approach includes a rain of ash that'll recolor your car...and lawn....and pets...and lungs. ;}

So you will be gone most of May? We are heading down to Cochise county May 19th to help band hummingbirds and Kartchner caverns and the Pima Air Museum and visit a friend that lives down there. Can't wait.
